Residency - Open Call

The very first residency programme focused on photography existing in Göteborg, Sweden.

This is an open call to invite 2 ITALY-BASED creatives working in photography for a 2-week research-based residency in 2025.

DEADLINE: April 10, 2025 at 23:59

DATES

You can choose between:

2 – 16 July, 2025
1 – 15 October, 2025

July is peak summer in Gothenburg, with long, bright days—but that doesn’t mean it won’t rain. The city is quiet, as many people are on holiday, and not much is happening. October is full autumn in Gothenburg, with shorter, darker, and cloudier days. However, more events and activities take place during this time.

WHO CAN APPLY

Artists, writers, curators, and critics working in photography and based in Italy (regardless of nationality).

To get the most out of it, the participant must be comfortable communicating in English.

WHAT WE OFFER
  • Free roundtrip flight Italy-Göteborg
  • Free accommodation with working desk
  • Free access to Göteborgs Bildverkstad, collective workshop for image production
  • Curatorial support by Stefano Conti
  • Possibility of carrying out gallery visits, attend openings, connect with locals, etc.
  • A lot of nature:)
WHAT YOU CAN DO HERE

We welcome process- and research-based projects, with no expectation to produce a final work or to prepare a presentation by the end of the residency.

ACCOMMODATION

Private apartment in Gothenburg with Wi-Fi, a desk, kitchen, bathroom, towels, bed sheets. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you need information about the accessibility of the building.

* SWIT does not own any housing but rents available spaces from fellow creatives who are away during the residency period.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The residency is self-directed, meaning you are expected to work independently. However, if you wish, you can collaborate with Stefano to structure a program for your time in Gothenburg based on your interests. He is always available for any need and will help you familiarize with the city and local art scene, create new contacts and give you suggestions for exploring the surrounding nature.

There are no other participants in residence at your time. However, at the co-working space Bildverkstad you will surely meet other creatives.

CO-WORKING SPACE BILDVERKSTAD

A collective workshop for image production. Here you will have access to equipment for scanning, editing, printing, bookbinding, and much more. There are also private rooms you can book to work in. To see the full equipment list, visit their website.

WHAT IS NOT INCLUDED

Artist fee, separate studio, local transportation, shipping of artworks, subsistence, insurance.

*Unfortunately, due to limited funding this year, we are unable to provide a fee or offer a studio space, as we did in previous editions of the residency.

JURY AND SELECTION PROCESS

Stefano Conti, founder of SWIT.

In April, four applicants will be invited for an interview. After that, only two will be granted the residency and will receive a binding contract to sign. By the beginning of March, all the applicants will receive notification of their application results.

We take into consideration the strength and quality of the practice, the relevance of the proposed project to our specific programme, and its feasibility within the 2-week frame.
